Do you feel Iona was right to accumulate so much Stuff?
Why do people hoard? What initiates hoarding? What relationship do people have with the items they hoard?
Are you a hoarder? If not, perhaps someone you know is a hoarder? What sort of items do you or they collect? Are the items stored tidily or messily?
What impact can hoarding have upon members of the person's family and entourage? And upon their own health and wellbeing?
What might be the principal risks of hoarding? Which other emergency services might need to be called upon and why?
What do the types of items or the locations of where they are stored tell us about the person's character or mindset?
Can you think of any other animals that tend to hoard Stuff? What might be their motivation and how successful are they in their endeavours?
What is the difference between hoarding, storing and collecting?
What is materialism? How does materlialism differ from hoarding, and from consumerism?
Can you give examples of materialism at different scales or in different cultures and environments?
What impact might materialism and consumerism have upon people's lives and upon the world we live in?
Who benefits from materialism?
As we go through life, we tend to accumulate Stuff of our own. Some items are sentimental, some practical and some essential, whereas others are nonessential.
When did you last have a clean-out of the nonessential items in your life?
Are you more productive in a tidy or messy environment?
Do you find there’s a connection between decluttering a place and decluttering the mind?
While Iona is busy filling the castle with Stuff, nature continues to amaze in its many forms – the sea, the beach, the woods, the wildlife, the mountains and the cosmos. Consider these:
Needs vs. Wants – What are things we really need (food, water, shelter etc.) versus things we want (new toys, new phones, lots of clothes)? How does buying too many things affect the environment? How does it affect our mood?
Where do things come from? – Discuss how everyday items like cars, clothes, electronics, and plastic toys are made, and the impact of factories, transport, and waste upon nature.
What happens to our Stuff? – Talk about what happens when we throw things away. Where does rubbish go? How can we reduce, reuse, and recycle to help the planet?
Happiness and Stuff – Do we need lots of things to be happy? What other activities (playing outside, spending time with family, helping others etc.) bring happiness without harming the environment? Is it acceptable to remove natural objects, such as sand, pebbles and shells from beaches?
Making better choices – What can we do to care for the environment? Discuss ideas like repairing old toys, donating things we don’t use, and prioritising eco-friendly products.
There are many species of flora and fauna in the world, each playing a valuable part in their various ecosystems. The roles of some organisms are indispensible to maintaining balance and sustainability.
Without bees, entire ecosystems would fail and yet, without humans, would the world thrive?
They say that where there is a problem, there is opportunity. Entrepreneurship is essentially new business that is often born from a new problem-solving idea. Many ideas need to be tried and tested before they are successful, and Entrepreneurs often expect to fail before they succeed.
Do you have Flora's entrepreneurial spirit? Have you had an idea that could solve an existing or future problem?
How would you go about bringing your idea to reality?
